Sunderland contemplate Welbeck return
Sunderland are eyeing up a swoop for former loanee Danny Welbeck as they look to reinforce their attacking options, having lost patience on the potential deal for Fabio Borini, the Daily Mail has reported.
Sunderland had seen a £14m bid for Italian Borini, who spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light, accepted by Liverpool – only for the move to stall.
Borini is unsure where his future lies and it is unclear whether he will remain at Anfield to battle for a place in Brendan Rodgers starting line-up.
While manager Gus Poyet refused to rule out a deal, it appears the Black Cats are drawing up other options should it prove an unsuccessful venture.
And Welbeck has been identified as the main man they want with the England international’s Manchester United future also remaining uncertain.
The 23-year-old is said to be unclear on what role he has to play for United in the coming season and any decision could impact on the interests in his services.
He was the subject of a £12m bid from Hull City earlier in the transfer window but opted against joining Steve Bruce’s side.
