Arsenal will be without midfielder Mikel Arteta for at least two weeks after he sprained his ankle during the 0-0 draw with Besiktas in the first leg of their Champions League qualifier on Tuesday, the Guardian has reported.

The Spaniard suffered the injury in a challenge with Demba Ba at the Ataturk Stadium, and the extent of the problem will not be revealed until after the club receive the results of a scan on Thursday, but Arsenal do not expect him to feature until after the international break.

He is now set to miss the second leg against Besiktas on Wednesday, as well as Premier League visits to former club Everton and newly promoted Leicester City. Mathieu Flamini is set to take his place for those games in the holding midfield role, having replaced Arteta in the game on Tuesday.

Should Per Mertesacker not return to the Arsenal starting line-up before the international break, Laurent Koscielny is likely to take over as captain for the time being, after he was handed the armband in the second half in Istanbul.
