Wenger plays down Chambers England talk
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has asked for patience regarding Calum Chambers amid talk the defender is in line for England recognition, Sky Sports has reported.
Chambers moved to the Gunners this summer from Southampton and has caught the eye playing in the centre of the Arsenal defence, having first featured for the Saints as a right-bac.
It’s been mooted that the 19-year-old could win a senior England cap in the near future but Wenger told a Press conference that people should be wary of getting ahead of themselves regarding the youngster’s future.
“I share the assessment on Calum Chambers; he has done extremely well but I think as well in England you have to be a bit more patient,” Wenger said. “He has played three games and I believe it is important for the development of the players that he does not go too fast, not so much on the football front but psychologically as well.
“Players need to cross hurdle after hurdle stronger and it doesn't go too quick for them. For me that is something that is very important in development.”
Chambers’ three games have seen two wins and a draw, with Manchester City dispatched 3-0 in the Community Shield on his debut, Crystal Palace downed 2-1 in Arsenal’s Premier League opener, and Chambers’ Champions League bow ending in a goalless draw away at Besiktas.
