Everton vs Arsenal - Premier League preview and team news

Arsenal face a tricky first away game of the new Premier League season as they travel to Goodison Park to face an Everton side who they edged for fourth place last term.

The hosts won this fixture 3-0 back in April, only for Arsenal to rediscover their form and take the final Champions League spot. It would take a remarkable effort for the Toffees to surpass those achievements this time around, and they will be targeting an early goal to get momentum on their side after experiencing frustration at Leicester City on opening day, when they squandered the lead twice.

Despite beating Premier League champions Manchester City in emphatic fashion in the Community Shield, Arsenal have been somewhat below-par in their opening two competitive matches.

However, they did show the patience and the determination to win against Crystal Palace on opening day despite a poor showing, which is a mark of a good side. They followed that up with a good draw against Besiktas in their Champions League qualifier, but should they be sloppy again here, Everton have the quality to make them pay.

The home side are without Ross Barkley, Arouna Kone and Bryan Oviedo, but Seamus Coleman, Leon Osman and Kevin Mirallas could all be handed starts.

German World Cup winners Per Mertesacker, Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski could all return to the Arsenal fold, but Mikel Arteta is out through injury along with Kieran Gibbs and Theo Walcott.
