Sunderland boss Poyet still hopeful over Borini

Sunderland manager Gustavo Poyet has admitted that he is still hopeful that he can sign Liverpool striker Fabio Borini before the end of the transfer window, the Daily Express has reported.

Fabio Borini

The Italian spent most of last season on loan at Sunderland, scoring seven Premier League goals as he helped them survive relegation in the final week. Poyet has continued to express his desire to bring him in on a permanent basis, but a deal has so far yet to be struck with the transfer deadline now on the horizon.

A £12m fee had been agreed between Sunderland and Liverpool in July, but that particular deal fell through as Borini appeared to have a change of heart and joined the Reds on their pre-season tour of the United States.

Despite the club’s frustration at the lack of progress, Poyet is still determined to sign Borini, as well as two other players on loan. He said: "My situation with Fabio is clear. I know Fabio and he would always be my first choice.

"Like anyone around Sunderland we thought Fabio was in when the news came out that we had agreed a fee. Then when he jumped on the plane to America, we all asked the same question: What is going on?

"We were trying to get close to perfection. Perfection was getting as much of the squad right as early as possible, but it wasn't possible, as simple as that. I don't know. It's a daily thing. There will be a few calls, but we'll have to see. We haven't put a date on it.

"We also have two loan signings available. It's important to know all the options and yet you don't know the options until the last moment.’
