Former Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o is reportedly on standby for Liverpool should their move for Mario Balotelli fall through, claims the Daily Mail.

The club have agreed a £16m fee for Italian striker Balotelli and the player is thought to have taken his medical ahead of the move, but it seems Brendan Rodgers has covered his options as he searches to reinforce his striking options.

The club currently only have Daniel Sturridge and Rickie Lambert as realistic senior strikers – Fabio Borini’s future at the club is incredibly uncertain.

Eto’o was released by Chelsea after his one year contract ran down – unsurprising given the breakdown in relationship with manger Jose Mourinho following comments about the player’s age.

The paper claims that the Cameroon international has undergone a medical in Paris, where he currently lives, and verbally agreed a 12 month deal to move to Anfield.

He is now awaiting the club’s contact to travel to travel to England to seal the deal.

It has been reported that the Red’s fierce rivals Everton are interested in taking on the 33-year-old but the lure of Champions League football means the striker is holding out for a move to Liverpool.

A return to the Premier League is thought to be high on the his agenda as he wants to prove he can cut it in the Premier League and above all else prove Mourinho wrong, who also called Eto’o an “old man” during his comments.
