Sunderland vs Man Utd - Premier League preview and team news

Sunday 24 August 2014

Manchester United will be intent on claiming their first points of the new season when they travel to Wearside to face Sunderland.

The home side were just minutes away from emerging with nothing on opening day themselves when they went 2-1 down at West Bromwich Albion, only for manager Gustavo Poyet’s decision to go all out for the equaliser to pay off. The Black Cats look a stronger proposition than they did last season, and here they will hope to emulate the performance of Swansea City as they aim to pile more misery on United.

Many have viewed Swansea’s success at Old Trafford as a reality check, with manager Louis van Gaal having been expected to make an instant impact. He may still achieve great things with the club, but that match suggested that the Red Devils are a long way behind title favourites Chelsea and Manchester City, and could face another tough battle to make the top four. Marcos Rojo has come in, but more new signings are needed.

Emanuele Giaccherini is still out for Sunderland, but they are boosted by the return of defenders Santiago Vergini and Billy Jones, with the latter in line to make his debut.

Rojo is expected to go straight into the starting XI for Man Utd, who are thin in midfield due to injuries to Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera. Jesse Lingard is also sidelined.
