West Brom seal Varela loan switch
West Brom have completed the loan signing of Porto winger Silvestre Varela for the whole of the season, the BBC has reported.
Varela has been capped 26 times by Portugal and scored the dramatic late equaliser against the USA as they snatched a 2-2 draw in the group stages of this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
The 29-year-old is the tenth summer singing at The Hawthorns, joining Chris Baird, Jason Davidson, Christian Gamboa, Craig Gardener, Brown Ideye, Jolean Lescott, Sebastien Pocognoli, Georgios Samaras and Andre Wisdom at the club.
He started 115 times for Porto in the league and managed 30 goals in that time.
New boss Alan Irvine is delighted with his new signing, hoping his quality will help the club to build on their opening two draws of the season.
He said: “"He is a fantastic addition to our squad. He's got pace and power, gets his fair share of goals and is also a creator of chances.”
Irvine also hopes his experience of playing in the Champions League and on the international stage can contribute towards improving his squad further.
He is in fact the fourth World cup star to be signed by Irvine this month as he looks to steer the Baggies to safety – Davidson, Gamboa and Samaras all featured at this summer’s tournament.
