Everton close to signing Eto’o

Tuesday 26 August 2014

Everton are on the verge of completing a deal to sign striker Samuel Eto’o, who is a free agent after leaving Premier League rivals Chelsea in the summer, the Daily Mail has reported.

Samuel Eto’o

The 33-year-old only spent one season at Stamford Bridge, but established himself as Chelsea’s first choice striker ahead of Demba Ba and Fernando Torres. He eventually went on to score 12 goals in 35 outings, including a hat-trick at home to Manchester United back in January.

Eto’o had been linked to Liverpool this summer, but that move will not happen as the Reds have now signed Mario Balotelli, and are unlikely to add to their attacking options again before the transfer deadline. He has now reached a provisional agreement to sign a two-year contract with their Merseyside rivals.

The move to Everton will require the Cameroon international to take a wage cut, having earned £130,000 per week while at Chelsea. He will now make the journey to Goodison Park for a medical, with a deal expected to be completed by Wednesday. The Toffees look set to beat off interest from Italian duo Milan and Roma.
