Arsenal fearing lengthy Giroud lay-off

Tuesday 26 August 2014

Arsenal are worried that striker Olivier Giroud could be out for up to three months after sustaining an ankle injury during Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Everton, the

Independent is reporting.

Olivier Giroud

The Frenchman scored a 90th minute equaliser to rescue a point at Goodison Park, but is now undergoing scans in order to determine to severity of the problem, with fears among the Gunners staff that he might have fractured a bone, and that would see him out of action until the end of November.

Should that be the case, manager Arsene Wenger may be forced to reconsider his striking options and dip into the transfer market, with only Joel Campbell, Lukas Podolski and Yaya Sanogo capable of playing as the lone striker. Another candidate, Theo Walcott, is still some weeks away from returning from his long-term injury.

Giroud has been Arsenal’s main striker for just over two seasons, with Wenger often relying on him to play through the middle in most of their competitive matches. He is likely to miss Sunday’s game with Leicester City, and is definitely out of the second leg of the Champions League qualifier against Besiktas on Wednesday.
