German club Hamburg have refused to deny their interest in signing Tottenham’s German midfielder Lewis Holtby before the close of the transfer window, Sky Sports is reporting.

Hamburg director Dietmar Beiersdorfer confirmed the club’s interest in the player despite him having three years left on his current contract.

Beiersdorfer is quoted by Hamburger Abendlatt as saying: ““I’d be lying if I said we have nothing to do with Holtby.”

The 23-year-old has had somewhat of a struggle breaking into the first team at White Hart Lane since his move from Schalke – after initially impressing he found himself used sparingly by Andre Villas Boas and then Tim Sherwood, before being shipped out on loan to now relegated Fulham.

However in June the player’s agent stated that Holtby was “optimistic” about life under new boss Mauricio Pochettino and wants to prove himself at the club.

But despite being used extensively during the preseason he has found himself as a substitute for Spurs’ two opening league games, failing to even come on against QPR with Christian Eriksen, Nacer Chadli and Erik Lamela selected ahead of him.

Holtby has made 41 appearances to date for the North London club and has bagged three goals.
