England manager Roy Hodgson could hand Aston Villa midfielder Fabian Delph his first national call up as he contends with a small injury crisis ahead of their friendly with Norway, the Telegraph has reported.

Fabian Delph

England are currently experiencing a shortage in midfield with Ross Barkley, Adam Lallana and Michale Carrick all injured, while Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard have now retired from the international scene.

And now Delph could find himself in the senior England set up having been capped at U19 and U21 level.

Hodgson made a personal check on the player as he watched his sides 0-0 draw with Newcastle at the weekend – after he was concerned about the player’s discipline.

He had been considered for a place in the England squad last season with some superb performances but his disciplinary record counted against him, although now it appears the player has worked on that side of his game.

Delph cost Aston Villa £6m when he moved to Villa Park back in 2009 from Leeds and had been tipped to shine.

While the player struggled to make an impact in his early years at Villa it appears he is now finding the form that was expected of the now 24-year-old.
