Chelsea concern over Costa

Chelsea are waiting to establish the extent of a hamstring injury to Diego Costa amid fears the Spain international could be missing for six weeks, ESPN has reported.

Diego Costa

The Blues paid Atletico Madrid £32m to sign Costa before the new season and thus far the Brazil-born striker has scored twice in as many games for his new club, netting against newly-promoted pair Burnley and Leicester City.

Chelsea are due to visit Everton this weekend and while they are hopeful Costa will be available to face the Toffees, there is a fear that he will be on the sidelines for more than a month. The injury has however been described as a ‘minor muscular injury.’

It’s thought that Costa’s fitness will determine Fernando Torres’ future as Torres would be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge but may stay if Costa is stricken.

A move to Milan has been mooted, although wages are a potential factor as the Serie A side can’t match the £9m-a-season Torres receives from the London club. Milan would instead offer £7m-a-season, either on loan or a permanent deal, but Chelsea won’t continue paying a portion of Torres’ wages should he leave.

Torres, who started his career at Costa’s former club, Atletico, has scored 45 times in 172 Chelsea appearances, and netted 91 in 244 for Atletico. Costa, meanwhile, scored 64 goals for Atletico in 135 games, winning the title in his final season at Vicente Calderon.
