Burnley vs Man Utd - Premier League preview and team news

Friday 29 August 2014

Manchester United will be hoping to bounce back from their mauling in Milton Keynes by beating a Burnley side that is also searching for its first win of the season.

Turf Moor

The home side were punished for their profligacy last time out at Swansea City, as they were guilty of missing several second half chances which would have seen them come away with at least a point.

All they lack to be competitive at present is a cutting edge, but the home supporters will be sensing blood at the prospect of extending United’s winless start, and they are certain to create a similar atmosphere at Turf Moor to when they stunned the Red Devils 1-0 in August 2009.

Despite making a number of changes, Louis van Gaal handed six internationals starts for the game at Milton Keynes, but they were outfought and outmuscled throughout, exposing a somewhat worrying state of affairs at Old Trafford. The draw at Sunderland in their last Premier League fixture was littered with mistakes, and the reaction has been to splash out nearly £60m on Angel Di Maria.

Alongside the likes of Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, the Argentine should ensure that United become a more potent attacking force, but much-needed reinforcements in central defence and central midfield are yet to be addressed, and the transfer deadline is looming.

Burnley are likely to recall several players after they were rested for the Capital One Cup defeat to Sheffield Wednesday, with Sam Vokes the only absentee.

Di Maria is likely to make his Man Utd debut, but fellow countryman Marcos Rojo is still waiting for international clearance. Michael Carrick and Luke Shaw are both out, while there are doubts over Jesse Lingard, Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera.
