Tottenham set to sign midfielder Stambouli
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is close to making his fifth signing of the summer, after the club agreed a fee with Montpellier for midfielder Benjamin Stambouli, reports Goal.com.
It had appeared that the 24-year-old was to move to Italy and join Fiorentina, who had been close to sealing a £4.7m deal. However, Tottenham have quickly stepped in, and are now on the brink of adding him to previous acquisitions Michel Vorm, Ben Davies, Federico Fazio and Eric Dier.
"An agreement has been reached between Montpellier and Tottenham to transfer Benjamin Stambouli," said the Ligue 1 club on their official Twitter account.
Stambouli, who won 14 caps for the French U-21 team, has spent his whole career so far at Montpellier after coming through the youth system, and was part of their unexpected title triumph in 2012, going on to play in the Champions League the following season.
He is now set to compete with the likes of Etienne Capoue and Sandro to play in the holding midfield role at White Hart Lane, and he appears to be an alternative to previous transfer target Morgan Schneiderlin. A medical is still to be completed, but the deal is expected to go through before the transfer deadline on Monday.
