Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has said that he wants injured striker Alvaro Negredo to remain with the club despite being repeatedly linked with a move away, Sky Sports has reported.

Alvaro Negredo

The 29-year-old Spaniard is currently side lined with a broken foot suffered during preseason and is not expected to be back fit until the end of September at the earliest.

Despite this he has repeatedly been linked with a move back to home land Spain, and even though the player reportedly faces possible exclusion from City’s Champions League squad Pellegrini wants the player to remain at the club.

He said: “Maybe one month ago some Spanish clubs had an interest in him but that was one month ago. At this moment, Alvaro is injured but part of our squad.

“Last year he did very well and then had an injury with his shoulder. After that, he didn't play so well but he's always an important player for us. We don't want to sell him. We want him to stay with us.”

Negredo, nicknamed ‘The Beast’, scored 23 goals in his debut campaign from 48 games – even with the shoulder injury that hampered him badly during the second half of the season.

He arrived from Spanish side Sevilla in a worth around £16m in July last year.

Back in Spain the striker managed to reach double figures in six consecutive season and scored a total of 117 goals in 255 appearances for La Liga clubs Almeria and then Sevilla.
