Stoke City manager Mark Hughes was delighted with his side’s organisation and determination after they earned a surprise 1-0 victory away to champions Manchester City, Sky Sports has reported.

The first half was a largely tepid affair, with Yaya Toure coming the closest for the hosts when his shot clipped the top of the crossbar. As a result of City’s below-par showing, Stoke grew in confidence as the game wore on and scored the only goal shortly before the hour mark.

Mame Biram Diouf received the ball deep inside his own half following a Man City corner, but outran Aleksandar Kolarov and beat Fernandinho before shooting low past goalkeeper Joe Hart. The Potters then held on to claim their first ever win at the Etihad Stadium, a venue where they had never scored at, let alone claimed a point.

After the game, Hughes had praise for the way his side executed the game-plan, saying: "We had a game-plan today and as with all game-plans, you have to commit to it and you have to make it work and that’s what we did today.

"I thought we were excellent, in terms of our understanding of what was required against an outstanding team - everyone acknowledges that - so you have to do everything correctly for the full 90 minutes.

"That’s what we did. We were resolute, got plenty of people behind the ball, made it difficult for them, didn’t allow them to play too many balls into key positions and were always a threat on the break. So we’re delighted with the performance and most importantly, the result.’
