Aston Villa deal for Cleverley under threat

Monday 01 September 2014

Aston Villa’s attempts to sign Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley on transfer deadline day is under threat due to the player’s wage demands, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Tom Cleverley

Cleverley has made an appearance for Man Utd this season during the 1-1 draw with Sunderland, but looks surplus to requirements under manager Louis van Gaal despite his lack of midfield options. Hull City are challenging Villa in the race for his signature.

A fee of £8m has reportedly been agreed, but the deal has stalled because the 25-year-old is demanding wages of £60,000 per week, which Villa appear unwilling to fulfil. He has been promised first-team football by manager Paul Lambert, but the transfer could fall through should Cleverley not want to scale down his desired salary.

After spending time on loan at Leicester City, Watford and Wigan Athletic, Cleverley was introduced to the Man Utd first-team in August 2011, but has gradually become the target for criticism for his perceived lack of impact in the centre of midfield. His form last season also saw him omitted from the England World Cup squad, having previously been a regular under Roy Hodgson.
