Former West Ham United, Tottenham and Portsmouth striker Jermain Defoe could be set for a return to the Premier League after only five months of playing in Canada for Toronto FC, according to Sky Sports.

The rumours come after the sacking of Toronto’s Head Coach Ryan Nelsen, who was dismissed following a 3-0 defeat to New England Revoloution on Saturday. Queens Park Rangers - managed by Defoe’s former boss Harry Redknapp - have been heavily linked.

Toronto general manager Tim Betzbatchenko has admitted that the club has received an offer for the 31-year-old from an unnamed club. He said: "We have received an offer and have discussed it internally. When you have scored as many goals as he has, and have the reputation and background that he has, then it's not uncommon to receive these offers.

"We have received multiple offers before, and in the course of this year, so I want to confirm that we are in talks. We are not 100 per cent committed in what we are doing and we have to sit down and talk about what is the best plan of action."

Defoe has scored 15 goals in his 16 appearances so far for Toronto, who he joined in February after spending five years in his second spell at Tottenham.

I would like to see Defoe return to the premiership. He is a great striker and is always committed to the cause
