Stambouli ‘turned down Fiorentina for Tottenham’
New Tottenham Hotspur signing Benjamin Stambouli turned down the chance to move to Serie A side Fiorentina in order to join the Premier League, Sky Sports has reported.
Stambouli is to complete a transfer to White Hart Lane from Montpellier before Monday’s transfer deadline and the French club’s manager believes the midfielder has made the right decision to go to English football.
“Signing for Tottenham is a great step forward,” Roland Courbois said. “He should be able to join the French team. Tottenham had a very good idea to sign him.”
Stambouli’s agent also revealed that a move to Italy was a possibility but not one the 24-year-old favoured over the offer from Mauricio Pochettino’s side. He also criticised the Viola for their tactics in negotiations. “Stambouli preferred Tottenham to Fiorentina,” David Martinez said.
“Benjamin's first choice was the Premier League and we have received a concrete offer from England,” Martinez added. “Fiorentina's error was wasting too much time to close the deal with Montpellier, about two weeks.”
Stambouli has spent his entire senior career at Montpellier, having been on the books of Marseille and Sedan as a youngster. He has yet to win a cap for the senior France side but has a handful of Under-21 appearances to his name and played more than 100 times for Montpellier.
