Arsenal complete deal for Welbeck

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has responded to calls from the club’s supporters to sign a striker by bringing in Manchester United’s Danny Welbeck for £16m, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

The deal was completed late on transfer deadline day, with the England international signing a five-year deal worth an estimated £115,000 per week. Welbeck appeared surplus to requirements at Old Trafford and had not started any of Man Utd’s opening three Premier League matches.

His chances of forcing his way back into the reckoning under Louis van Gaal became slimmer when Radamel Falcao moved to Man Utd on loan on Monday, with Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie already ahead in the pecking order.

The 23-year-old began his career at Old Trafford, and while he had loan spells at Preston North End and Sunderland, he made 142 appearances and scored 29 goals for the Red Devils, including on his debut against Stoke City at the age of 17.

Wenger will now be hoping that Welbeck is able to fill the void left by the injury to Olivier Giroud, which will keep the Frenchman out until the beginning of 2015. Rivals Tottenham had been interested in a loan deal, but the player’s preference was for a move to the Emirates Stadium.
