Azpilicueta agrees new five year Chelsea deal
Wednesday 03 September 2014
Chelsea full back Cesar Azpilicueta has signed a new contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2019, Sky Sports has reported.
The Spanish international signed for the Blues back in 2012 from French club Marseille and is a firm fixture in Jose Mourinho’s starting XI, and kept the now departed Ashley Cole out of the side last term.
In fact players named him their Chelsea player of the year last season as he played his part in a defence that conceded just 27 times in 37 games.
He has been rewarded for his fine form with a new deal after playing every minute of their three games so far this campaign.
And the club expressed their happiness at tying the 25-year-old Spaniard down to a long term contract.
A club statement read: “We are pleased to announce Cesar Azpilicueta has today signed a new five-year contract.
“Azpilicueta, affectionately known as ‘Dave’ by supporters, ended his first Chelsea season by lifting the Europa League trophy.”
The full back has so far made 95 appearances for Chelsea and scored once for the club.
Azpilicueta was part of the Spanish squad that saw their reputation dismantled at a disastrous World Cup this summer, but has been reselected for their upcoming European Championship qualifiers.
