Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has warned new loan signing Radamel Falcao that he is not guaranteed a place in the starting line-up, and that he will have to fight for his place in the team, reports ESPN.

Falcao moved to Old Trafford on loan for the rest of the season in a surprise deadline day deal. The move could be made permanent if United decide to pay parent club Monaco £43m next summer.

The Colombian, who missed the World Cup due to an injury sustained during his first season at Stade Louis II, has made just 22 appearances for Monaco and scored 13 goals. He joined them in a big-money move in 2013 after prolific spells at FC Porto and Atletico Madrid.

With Danny Welbeck having left for Arsenal and Javier Hernandez making a loan move to Real Madrid, Falcao will now compete with van Persie and captain Wayne Rooney to play in the Man Utd attack. His first game is likely to be the home clash with Queens Park Rangers on September 14.

And van Persie, who insists he is not in need of knee surgery, has told Falcao that despite his pedigree and track record, his place in the team will not be assured. "I welcome his arrival, he makes us better. At a top club you should always go for the best, which also fits my philosophy. Falcao must fight for his place, as I also have to," said the Dutchman.
