Everton midfielder Gibson looking to find form after injury

Thursday 04 September 2014

Everton midfielder Darron Gibson has admitted it is ‘now or never’ for him as he returns from a 10-month injury lay-off, the Daily Mail has reported.

Darron Gibson

The 26-year-old picked up an anterior cruciate ligament while playing for the Republic of Ireland in October 2013, and he finally made his comeback on Wednesday, starting for his country as they defeated Oman 2-0 at the Aviva Stadium. He played for 70 minutes before being replaced by Glenn Whelan.

The injury has meant that he has been unable to play for Everton for almost a year, and the Toffees are slowly easing him back into the first team fold, with manager Roberto Martinez naming Gibson among the substitutes for Saturday’s defeat to Chelsea.

However, he still faces a struggle to get into the Everton team, with the likes of Gareth Barry, James McCarthy, Leon Osman and Muhamed Besic all challenging to play in his position.

And Gibson realises that he must start performing well immediately. He said: 'Being out for 10 months last season gave me a lot of time to think about things, and I think this is now or never, really, to be honest with you, so I am looking forward to the task ahead.

'It just made me realise that I'm not getting any younger. I need to start playing games and I need to start doing well for myself. It's a big opportunity for me.'
