Kurt Zouma isn’t expecting to dislodge first-choice pair John Terry and Gary Cahill right away at Chelsea, with Sky Sports reporting the France youngster is willing to bide his time under Jose Mourinho.

Zouma was signed in January by Chelsea but allowed to see out the rest of the season with St. Etienne before heading to Stamford Bridge for the new season, once his loan deal had expired.

The 19-year-old has told French publication L’Equipe that he won’t make the same mistakes in his early days at Chelsea as he did when he was coming through with his former club. “When I was at Saint-Etienne and I didn’t play, I immediately got upset. But I learnt,” he said.

“Now there are senior players, stars in my position, and they are doing a great job. I take my time. I am learning besides those defenders. I know my time will come,” Zouma continued. “Jose Mourinho told me: ‘Rafael Varane, I made him start against Manchester City. You have to be ready to play at any moment.’”

Zouma added that Varane and a fellow Premier League newcomer, Eliaquim Managala, are the players he intends to follow by breaking into the senior France side. “I am using Varane and Mangala as role models. Nowadays they are in the French team and I hope to join them,” he confirmed.

“Euro 2016 is an objective I set to myself. Even if it will be very difficult to get a position, the door is not so far away.”

Zouma has yet to feature for the full Les Bleus side but has been involved at youth level up to the Under-21 stage, while he made more than 50 appearances for St. Etienne before the move to London, winning the French League Cup in 2013.
