Aarons Newcastle goal shock

Newcastle United winger Rolando Aarons has admitted his shock at finding himself on the scoresheet for the Magpies, reports The Guardian.

Aarons scored a 73rd-minute headed goal against Crystal Palace in the Premier League last week, and acknowledged the unusual nature of the strike. “It was the first header I’ve scored in my life. It was just instinct. I didn’t think about it but to see it hit the back of net in front of all those fans was just a crazy feeling.”

The England under-20 international had only entered the fray six minutes earlier, replacing Yoan Gouffran, and insisted he would not get carried away by his immediate impact.

“I’m not big-headed or anything, I just want people to recognise what I’m doing for this team and how much it means to be here,” said Aarons. “It’s not hard to keep my feet on the ground because it’s not my personality to get carried away with anything. I like to take things in my stride and I’m quite humble.”

18-year-old Aarons was born in Jamaica, but moved to England and joined the youth set-up at Bristol City, before moving to Newcastle at the age of 16. An impressive pre-season, including a goal in a friendly against Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04, earned him a call-up to Alan Pardew’s first team squad. He made his debut as a substitute in the Premier League opener against champions Manchester City, before getting his first start in the Capital One Cup victory at Gillingham.

Aarons is part of the England under-20 squad, but is still eligible to represent Jamaica at senior level. However, it is thought he will reject any overtures from the land of his birth, as he is hoping to pursue an international career with his adopted country.
