Falcao: I proved doubters wrong
Radamel Falcao believes he has proved the doubters wrong after his two goals set Atletico Madrid on the way to Europa League glory over Athletic Bilbao.
“When I moved to Atletico many people said I was making a mistake – I've waited for this moment to tell them that the mistake was all theirs for saying that,” the Colombian told UEFA.com
“I can't do justice to just how happy I am. I owe it to the team, they helped me a lot. I think the pressure we managed to put them under when they were on the ball was key, in every area of the pitch. It's a dream come true. I'm just speechless, unable to describe all this: to have won the Europa League with two different clubs, and above all to be the top scorer two years running.”
El Tigre (The Tiger), as Falcao is nicknamed, struck a superb opener after just seven minutes when he curled the ball into the far corner, and praised his father for perfecting his technique when he was a youngster.
“I was trying to work some space and when it came I got my shot away,” explained the 26-year-old. “My dad always said I have to aim for the far post and for the first time I did; he will be happy.”
Falcao was leading scorer in last year’s competition with a record 17 goals and has now taken his tally to 29 in as many games. Atletico teammate Juanfran was full of praise for the former Porto man afterwards.
“He is an extraordinary player. He is a great person, too, and I hope he will become even bigger at Atletico. Because that's what he does – scores goals and does big things at big moments.
“I think we were a bit sharper tonight and capitalised on all our chances. It helps when you have the 'Tiger' and also Diego. I am very happy for both of them, and for the team as a whole."
