Man Utd news - Utd chase De Gea, Chicharito stars, Rio back - solutions and problems

By John Baines

Thursday 30 September 2010

Every morning A Different League searches the nations press to bring you the latest goings on at Man Utd. Today:

Chicharito stars.

After snatching a late winner against Valencia, Mexican striker Javier Hernandez has been lavished with praise from all quarters. ‘Chicharito’ had failed to find the net since bundling home against Chelsea in the Community Shield, but his late, clinical finish at the Mestalla grabbed the Reds only their second win on Spanish soil in 19 attempts. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said Hernandez’s introduction gave United, “More energy, penetration and speed.” Whilst midfielder Darren Fletcher described the Mexican hotshot as a “real talent, who is going to become a great United player.”

Rio back - solutions and problems.

The reappearance of Rio Ferdinand clearly shored up a previously porous United backline, but the former skipper’s appearances are likely to be fleeting rather than frequent. After missing large parts of last season due to a recurring back problem, Ferdinand was rested for the weekend trip to Bolton with last night’s Champions League clash in mind. However, after a commanding display next to his old mate Nemanja Vidic, Ferdinand chose to stand up for the majority of the return flight to Manchester, such is the extent of his back aggravations. There seems little chance of Ferdinand appearing against Sunderland on Saturday, and the silky stopper is likely to be bubble wrapped through the entire campaign to ensure he can take part in the games which matter.

Utd chase De Gea.

The transfer window may only just have passed but that does not mean there’s a let-up in idle transfer rumours. The Daily Mail are putting two and two together and coming up with David De Gea as the long term solution once Edwin van Der Sar relinquishes his spot between the posts at Old Trafford. Unsurprisingly the 19-year-old stopper was reticent to say much and flat-batted suggestions he was on his way from Atletico Madrid by saying, “The important thing is I have a contract here and I’m an Atletico player until 2013. That is what matters.”
