Del Bosque pens new Spain deal

Wednesday 18 April 2012

Vicente del Bosque has arrived at an agreement with the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to renew his contract as national team boss.

Del Bosque’s current deal runs out after the end of Euro 2012, which starts on June 8 in Poland and Ukraine, but the former Real Madrid boss, who led Spain to World Cup glory in 2010, revealed on Onda Cero that he has penned a new contract.

“I’ve renewed as national team boss. I have renewed my contract with the RFEF,” he said, although he did not reveal for how long but everything points to it being up until the 2014 World Cup finals to be held in Brazil.

The Spanish team will be defending their title as European Champions this summer, but Del Bosque does not believe it will be a disaster if they fail to do so.

“I don’t subscribe to that theory and we will need to analyse everything,” he commented. “Of course I would have liked more time to prepare for the championships but I don’t want to make excuses.”

The 61-year-old took charge of Spain in July, 2008, a few days after their European success in Austria and Switzerland under Luis Aragones, and in his four years on the bench has seen his team set records for the most victories and most goals scored by any Spanish team.
