Thursday 03 May 2012

Roy Hodgson, the new England manager, has received praise from Liverpool pair Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, who the 64-year-old previously managed during his brief spell at Anfield, the Independent has reported.

Hodgson was confirmed as Fabio Capello’s replacement on Monday despite Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp appearing to be the favourite for the position. Gerrard, a candidate to become the full-time England captain, and Carragher, who has retired from international duty, have revealed they were both pleased to see the ex-Fulham manager given the job of leading the national team.

Carragher, while admitting Hodgson’s time at Liverpool had been ‘difficult’ said: “I’m delighted for him. It’s important we get behind the manager and support him. We want a good and successful England team.” Gerrard, meanwhile, said Hodgson had come to Liverpool at the wrong time but praised Hodgson as tactically strong and a decent and honest man.

Carragher won 38 caps for England between 1999 and 2010, despite having originally retired from international football in 2007, but being asked back by Capello to be part of the squad for the 2010 World Cup.
