Wednesday 16 May 2012

Rio Ferdinand has been left out of the England squad for Euro 2012. Roy Hodgson has instead chosen Chelsea captain John Terry among his central defenders, along with Terry’s Chelsea teammate Gary Cahill, while there is no place for Michael Carrick, Micah Richards or Peter Crouch.

Stewart Downing is included in midfield, as are Arsenal pair Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott, and Wayne Rooney is selected despite being suspended for the opening two games of the tournament. Andy Carroll travels, as do Danny Welbeck and Jermain Defoe.

Joe Hart, Robert Green and John Ruddy are the three goalkeepers picked by Hodgson.

The squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, Robert Green, John Ruddy

Defenders: Glen Johnson, Phil Jones, John Terry, Joleon Lescott, Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole, Leighton Baines

Midfielders: Theo Walcott, Stewart Downing, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Steven Gerrard, Gareth Barry, Frank Lampard, Scott Parker, Ashley Young, James Milner

Forwards: Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck, Andy Carroll, Jermain Defoe

Standby: Jack Butland, Phil Jagielka, Jordan Henderson, Adam Johnson, Daniel Sturridge
