Davids backs appointment of Liverpool captain Gerrard as England skipper

Monday 21 May 2012

The decision to appoint Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard as England skipper has been applauded by former Juventus, Ajax and Barcelona midfielder and Netherlands international Edgar Davids, the Liverpool Echo has reported.

New England manager Roy Hodgson confirmed Gerrard would wear the armband for Euro 2012 shortly after announcing his squad for the tournament last week, selecting Gerrard over Scott Parker, who captained the national team against Davids’ Holland in a late season friendly.

Gerrard last captained England in a Euro 2012 qualifying match against Switzerland in 2010, but after John Terry was removed from the position by the Football Association because of his legal issues, a new skipper was needed. Gerrard is the player with the joint-second highest number of caps in Hodgson’s 23, with 90, level with Frank Lampard and behind only Ashley Cole who has 93. The former captain Terry lags behind with 72 appearances.

Davids was effusive in his praise for both Gerrard as a player and the decision to install him as captain. He said: “The important thing for me is that Hodgson has named Gerrard as the new captain. I think Gerrard is amazing and can do a great job. Gerrard is passionate and leads from the front.
