Giggs relishing Team GB Olympics appearance

By Andrew Tuft

Monday 09 July 2012

Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs has spoken of his pride at being involved in the Team GB squad for the London Olympics after being named captain of Stuart Pearce’s side, Sporting Life has reported.

The 38-year-old Giggs is one of the squad’s three overage players, along with fellow Welshman Craig Bellamy and Manchester City defender Micah Richards, with Giggs confirmed as captain over the weekend.

Giggs never featured in a major international tournament during his Wales career and, after retiring from the international scene in 2007, admitted he thought his chance had gone. Giggs added: “I didn't quite get to a major tournament with Wales, which will always remain a big disappointment. But it is great to be involved in the tournament environment - I've not experienced that before.

A veteran of more than 20 years with Manchester United, Giggs has made over 900 appearances for his club, scoring more than 150 goals, and last season appearing 33 times and getting on the score sheet on four occasions. For Wales Giggs won 64 caps and scored 12 goals, making his debut in 1991 and was at the time the country’s youngest ever player.
