Man Utd midfielder Cleverley wants Olympic gold

Wednesday 25 July 2012

Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley has set his sights on Olympic Gold with Team GB this summer, as they prepare to meet Senegal in their opening match of London 2012, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The 22-year-old has targeted the gold medal in this year’s Olympic football tournament, and a trip to Buckingham Palace should they claim the top spot on the podium. Team GB though face stiff competition from Brazil and Spain, with the latter including three players who recently won the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine.

Cleverley said: “I cannot help dream about it, I know there is a long way to go yet starting with the Senegal match but being on the podium in that number one position is my ambition.

The midfielder will turn 23 the day after the men’s final at Wembley and admits his excitement at the potential Buckingham Palace visit on his birthday. He said: “Personally the achievement would be extra special with that possible visit to Buckingham Palace on my birthday. I’ve had a lot of great experiences already with the squad but that would be the best.

Cleverley has so far been very positive of the Team GB experience which in the build-up to the competition has caused problems amongst the home nations Football Association. The squad is made up of 13 English players and just five Welsh, and they recently lost to favourites Brazil in a warm-up match.
