Day 17 World Cup action round-up - England and Mexico dreams shattered, Germany and Argentina progress
Day 17 of the 2010 World Cup saw the day England fans had all been waiting for quickly develop into a nightmare. Germany took advantage of some shaky defending to record a 4-1 drumming over the Three Lions and despite the rampant score line, England fans cannot help but think what could have been if goal line technology was in use. Elsewhere, Argentina continue to impress, comfortably defeating a talented Mexico side 3-1 to set up a quarter-final with Germany.

England were sent crashing out of the 2010 World Cup after an embarrassing 4-1 defeat at the hands of Germany.
Germany took a sudden lead on 20 minutes when John Terry and Matthew Upson failed to deal with a straightforward long ball from German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, allowing Miroslav Klose to steal in and slot home past David James.
It was not long before the deficit was doubled, Lukas Podolski firing home through the legs of David James after a swift move down the right had caused further confusion in the English defence. England needed a quick fire response if they regained any hopes of victory and they produced it, Matthew Upson heading home on 37 minutes from a Steven Gerrard cross.
Just minutes later, Frank Lampard looked to have pulled England level when his dipping volley cannoned off the underside of the crossbar and over the line. Remarkably, the goal was not given as the officials deemed it hadn’t crossed the line despite replays showing it was clearly yards over.
The second half saw the dream disappear rapidly for England, Thomas Muller scoring twice as Germany produced a master class in counter attacking football to put the game beyond the Three Lions, securing a place in the quarter-finals in impressive style.

A Carlos Tevez brace helped Argentina on their way to a comfortable 3-1 victory over South American rivals Mexico, setting up a quarter-final meeting with Germany.
Mexican right-back Carlos Salcido nearly opened the scoring after eight minutes when his spectacular strike from all of 30 yards cannoned back of the crossbar.
Argentina had looked threatening early on though and took the lead on 25 minutes, Mexican goalkeeper Oscar Perez failing to gather the ball, allowing Lionel Messi to chip the ball to Tevez who nodded home. Replays in the stadium showed Tevez was clearly two yards offside when the ball was played, leaving the Mexican players and coaching staff incensed.
Argentina doubled their lead just eight minutes later when Gonzalo Higuain took advantage of some horrendous defending to round the goalkeeper and slot into the empty net.
Carlos Tevez all but wrapped up the victory on 52 minutes, rifling a right footed shot past Perez into the top corner to hand Mexico a mountain to climb. Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez gave them hope on 71 minutes, turning smartly before smashing past Sergio Romero into the roof of the net.
Diego Maradona’s Argentine side held on despite Mexican pressure in the closing stages to record a comfortable 3-1 success and continue their smooth progress through the competition.
