Liverpool v Man Utd: Preview and team news

By Tim Doel

Saturday 15 October 2011

In what Sir Alex Ferguson describes as the ‘game of the season’, Manchester United travel to Anfield to face Liverpool for an always eagerly anticipated derby encounter.

United have started the season running, dropping points in only one game from their seven so far, a 1-1 draw with Stoke City two rounds ago, and as such sit at the top of the Premier League table, level on points with their local rivals Manchester City.

Liverpool meanwhile have overcome hiccups in the form of Stoke and Tottenham, to win against their own local rivals Everton, and propel Kenny Dalglish’s side into fifth position.

Dalglish will be delighted to call upon England midfielder Steven Gerrard, who looks set to secure a starting place following his return from longterm injury – back also come Glen Johnson to sure up a right-back position that has caused problems for Liverpool of late, along with Daniel Agger to bolster the defence.

United meanwhile will start Wayne Rooney on the bench, whose state of mind was questioned following off the pitch events, and his subsequent sending-off for England against Montenegro that rules the striker out of at least half the Euro 2012 tournament. Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand are nearing full fitness, but it is Ferdinand who get's the nod to partner Jonny Evans in central defence. Nani and Hernandez both start on the bench, with Phil Jones getting a midfield role.

Line-ups

Liverpool: Reina; Kelly, Carragher, Skrtel, Jose Enrique; Kuyt, Lucas, Adam, Gerrard, Downing; Suarez.

Man Utd: De Gea, Smalling, Evans, Ferdinand, Evra; Jones, Fletcher, Giggs, Young, Park, Welbeck.
