Valencia ready to pounce for Dutch international full-back

Thursday 01 December 2011

Ajax full-back Gregory Van der Wiel is understood to be studying an offer to join Valencia next season, according to AS, with the publication also claiming the 23-year-old is Los Ché’s number one target for next summer.

Although negotiations for the Dutch international’s transfer have not started between the two clubs, representatives from Valencia, including director of football Braulio Vázquez and Vice-President Javier Gómez, met with the player’s agent in Madrid last week to try and thrash out an agreement. Nonetheless, the most difficult part of any deal will be to try and persuade Ajax to part with Van der Wiel, although he is thought to be open to a move to La Liga.

Ajax are aware he is one of the most coveted full-backs in European football and has a list of potential suitors that includes Barcelona. An attacking right-back known for his speed down the flank, Van der Wiel exploded onto the scene in 2007 and received the Johan Cruyff award for Dutch ‘Young Player of the Year’ in 2010.

Comparisons have already been made with Michael Reiziger and having made his full international debut in February, 2009 he has since gone on to represent Holland 25 times and was a member of the Dutch team that lost the 2010 World Cup final to Spain.
