Wigan vs Arsenal - Match preview and prediction

By Bryan Waters

Saturday 03 December 2011

Wigan, off the back of four points in their last two games, take on Arsenal at the DW Stadium.

Roberto Martinez's men were eight games without a win before they drew 3-3 with Blackburn in their last home game and then beat Sunderland 2-1 away at the Stadium of Light. Franco di Santo's stoppage time equaliser cost Steve Bruce his Black Cats job, but gave delight to Wigan. The Latics have been struggling and they see the return of Emmerson Boyce following injury. Wigan, however, have Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United to play following their fixture against the Gunners.

Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw with Fulham at the Emirates Stadium last weekend and Arsene Wenger also saw his side go out of the Carling Cup to a late Sergio Aguero goal. Wenger blamed 'physical and mental fatigue' for the draw with Fulham and they are without Abou Diaby and Tomas Rosicky through injury. Right backs Bacary Sagna and Carl Jenkinson are still out with injuries, so central defender Laurent Koscielny could deputise once again.

The Gunners have only taken a point from their last two trips to Wigan and Martinez will be looking to inflict more misery on Wenger. Arsenal will have to bounce back from their draw last weekend and should have enough quality to pick up a win over Wigan, who sit 19th in the Premier League table.
