Tottenham lead race for Ajax defender

By Andy Brunning

Friday 09 December 2011

Tottenham are mounting an audacious bid to beat rivals Arsenal to the signing of Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen, according to Metro.

With Ledley King only capable of playing a limited number of games per season, Michael Dawson on the long term injury list, and Sebastian Bassong looking to leave the club, Harry Redknapp is looking for defensive reinforcements, and is lining up a £10 million bid for Ajax’s central defender.

The 24-year-old is under contract at Ajax until 2013, but is thought to have no plans to extend his deal, and the Dutch club are apparently keen to recoup a fee for the player rather than see him leave for free at the end of his contract. Arsenal had previously been linked with a deal, but now reports suggest that Spurs officials have held initial meetings with Ajax with a view to a January move.
