West Brom vs Wigan - Match preview and prediction

By Bryan Waters

Saturday 10 December 2011

The Hawthorns plays host to two of the league's worst goalscoring sides. Wigan, in desperate need of some points, travel to the Midlands to take on West Brom.

Roberto Martinez's side have only scored 12 times this season and are languishing in the relegation places. They were resoundly beaten 4-0 by Arsenal last weekend and are desperate for a win before their next three games. The Latics face Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United, which could make them bottom on Christmas Day. Antolin Alcaraz returns from a three match suspension and Emmerson Boyce and Hugo Rodallega are both back in contention following injury.

West Brom have only scored one more than Wigan so far this season and have only scored six at the Hawthorns. Roy Hodgson is expected to name Shane Long and Peter Odemwingie up front against Wigan, because of the absence of Zoltan Gera. Long scored West Brom's goal in the 1-1 draw with QPR, a game they really should have lost. The Irish striker has battled a groin problem, but should be fine to take on Wigan. Hodgson will be eager to get three points on the board at home and kick their Christmas campaign off with a flourish.

Wigan and West Brom have never played out a goalless draw in their meetings. Both have bad goalscoring records, but Wigan have registered just two clean sheets and West Brom have three. The game has been billed as boring, but it could be a goals filled game with West Brom just coming out on top.
