Wigan vs Chelsea - Match preview and prediction

By Bryan Waters

Saturday 17 December 2011

Resurgent Wigan, with two wins out of their last three, take on top four side Chelsea at the DW Stadium.

Wigan had been written off by many as relegation certainties, but their victories in recent weeks have allowed them to move from the foot of the table. The Latics picked up a huge win away at West Brom last weekend and sent their small band of merry Wigan followers home with a smile. Roberto Martinez has encouraged his attractive style of football and has silenced the doubters. Antolin Alcaraz is struggling with a rib injury, so Emmerson Boyce could step in for the Paraguayan. Martinez's side have only won once at home however and that came against QPR back in August.

Chelsea picked up a huge victory over league leaders Manchester City on Monday night. Midfielder Frank Lampard scored the winner from the penalty spot, but is expected to be on the bench once again against Wigan. Andre Villas-Boas has come under criticism for his side's performances, but wins over Newcastle and Manchester City have started to silence the doubters. The Blues see the return of Brazilian defender David Luiz after suspension. Chelsea will be confident after their last few victories and are climbing back into the title race, which will be further enhanced by a Blues victory.

The Blues have won six of their last seven visits to the DW Stadium and will be confident of another win. Villas-Boas' men have a tough schedule coming up to Christmas and should start the festive schedule with a good victory against Martinez's side.
