Tottenham vs Sunderland - Match preview and prediction

By Bryan Waters

Sunday 18 December 2011

High-flying Tottenham face a rejuvenated Sunderland in Martin O'Neill's first away game as Black Cats manager.

Sunderland came from a goal down to win 2-1 against Blackburn last weekend. O'Neill inspired the club to victory with some key tactical decisions, but faces a sterner test against Harry Redknapp's side. Nicklas Bendtner and Lee Cattermole were arrested and bailed earlier this week on suspicion of criminal damage, but are available for selection. Midfielder Craig Gardner has also returned from a hamstring injury and O'Neill could give a first start to James McClean following his cameo role off the substitutes bench against Rovers.

Spurs have been one of the stories of the season and have become genuine contenders for the title. Harry Redknapp has his side playing attractive football and they were unlucky to lose their 11 match unbeaten run against Stoke City last weekend. Spurs also went out of the Europa League in midweek and will be eager to get a win in the league to reiterate their title credentials. Younes Kaboul's red card against Stoke rules him out and Redknapp is hoping Ledley King can become available for the game. Striker Roman Pavyluchenko is likely to miss out with a back complaint, so Rafael van der Vaart and Emmanuel Adebayor should start up front again.

Spurs have been formidable at home and should add another win to their collection against Sunderland. O'Neill's side played well last week, but will struggle to contain the attacking onslaught Spurs will bring.
