Real Madrid cruise to Copa del Rey victory as Mallorca, Espanyol and Sevilla all win
Wednesday 21 December 2011
Real Madrid did what was expected at the Santiago Bernabéu as they cruised past Ponferradina 5-1 in the second leg of their last 32 Copa del Rey tie to record a 7-1 aggregate victory. The holders ensured passage to the next round with a brace from Jose Callejón and goals from Nuri Sahin, Raphael Varane and Joselu with Barrera Acoran netting the Segunda B side’s consolation.
Also through to the next round are Real Mallorca, who came back from a 1-0 first-leg defeat to Sporting Gijón to record a 2-0 triumph at El Molinón. An Alejandro Menendez Diaz own goal and a second-half strike from Emilio Nsue proved sufficient to overcome Manuel Preciado’s side.
Espanyol had an easy night of it against Celta Vigo, easing to a 4-2 win after a goalless first leg. On-loan Manchester City winger Vladimir Weiss opened the scoring before further goals from Álvaro Vazquez, Sergio Garcia and a Hugo own goal settled matters for the Catalans; David Rodríguez netted two for the visitors late on.
In the final game of the evening Sevilla defeated neighbours San Roqué 2-1 to go through 3-1 on aggregate. A double from Freddie Kanoute, including a penalty, gave Marcelino’s men a far from comfortable victory, with Adrian getting a consolation.
