Knight backs Cahill for Chelsea success

By Bryan Waters

Monday 02 January 2012

Bolton defender Zat Knight has backed teammate Gary Cahill to be a success at Chelsea, if he can agree terms with the club, The Telegraph reports.

Chelsea have agreed a £7m with Bolton for the England international, but the first meeting between Cahill’s representative and Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay did not reach the expected outcome. Cahill is looking for more money and a better contract than the one currently offered to him by the Blues, but the deal should be completed before the end of next week. The Bolton defender’s contract expires in the summer and Owen Coyle has looked to cash in instead of losing Cahill on a free in the summer. If the move to Chelsea is not completed by Wednesday night, Coyle has already stated his intentions of playing Cahill against Everton on that day.

Andre Villas-Boas’ side are fifth in the table and are struggling to keep clean sheets, but are hopeful Cahill will form a good partnership with England international teammate John Terry. Knight has played alongside Cahill at Bolton all season and believes that the 26 year old had to make the move to Chelsea to enhance his England chances.

Knight said: ‘When you play with top players, it brings the best out of you. He’s a fantastic player, but hopefully, there’s a lot more for him still to give. He’s shown in the last few seasons how good he is. Now, if he’s going to be playing week in, week out with John Terry and Ashley Cole, then he’ll get a lot more games for England. The type of money he’s going for, it can go straight back into rebuilding the team and will help us sign a few players’.
