Chelsea, Blackburn and Bolton urged to look long-term

By Bryan Waters

Saturday 07 January 2012

‘Clubs need to take a long-term view’, Bassett believes

Former manager Dave Bassett has stated his view that clubs need to give their managers a longer chance to make an impact than the current trend dictates.

This season has seen fewer managerial changes than in previous recent seasons, but Steve Bruce has still lost his job at Sunderland as well as Phil Brown at Preston North End. Bassett enjoyed his fair share of clubs including Leicester City, Sheffield United, Southampton and Wimbledon. The 67 year old was inducted into the LMA Hall Of Fame after reaching 1,000 games as a manager back in 2000 and believes clubs have to keep their managers for longer, which has shown this season.

Bassett said: ‘Clubs thinking: “Do we really need to change the manager?” If you believe the manager is the right man, you have to stick with him and deal with the ups and downs. If a manager gets sacked, a level of compensation will usually be due and maybe clubs are wondering whether they want to spend all that money to change a manager and his staff when things might not improve. Ultimately, clubs need to take a long-term view and not make knee-jerk reactions every time they lose a few games’.

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas, Blackburn boss Steve Kean and Bolton manager Owen Coyle have all been facing the sack in the media, but the three sides have stuck by their managers. Bassett believes that managers cannot take all their criticism to heart and has called for those in danger to avoid reading the papers and watching television.
