Chelsea complete signing of De Bruyne

By Bryan Waters

Tuesday 31 January 2012

Chelsea have completed the transfer of Genk midfielder Kevin De Bruyne and will now loan him back to the Belgian side until the end of the season, PA reports. The 20 year old has signed a five and a half year deal and the Blues have agreed a £6.7m fee.

De Bruyne is predominantly a left winger and has been on Chelsea's radar for a long time, but became more prominent when he played twice against the Blues in the Champions League this season. The Belgian will join up with Thibault Courtois, his former Genk teammate, in the summer at Stamford Bridge and is expected to figure in a backup role until he can force himself into the side.

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas said earlier this week that the deal was made by the club and not the manager himself, which leaves doubts over De Bruyne's starting hopes. Genk confirmed the deal and the 20 year old will spend the rest of the season with the Belgian champions.

A statement on Genk's official website read: 'The transfer of Kevin De Bruyne to Chelsea has been completed. He has signed for five and a half seasons and will continue (playing with) Genk until June. His signature was confirmed at 0.30 last night. De Bruyne and his agent will return back today from London, along with general director Dirk Degraen. Genk will hold a press conference with (director) Jacob Gunther and Dirk Degraen in which they will clarify the transfer policy. Afterwards, Kevin De Bruyne will also give an explanation about his transfer to the English club.'

it is a great honor to receive a player like De Bruyne who is young and extremely talented with in-depth passion for soccer and most importantly wins. Hope he gets grip and joins the first team ASAP.
