Wolverhampton vs Liverpool - Match preview and prediction

By Bryan Waters

Tuesday 31 January 2012

Liverpool look to continue their cup euphoria when they travel to Molineux and take on Wolves in an important Premier League tie.

The Reds were disappointing away at Bolton in their last Premier League game, but progression to the Carling Cup final and a win in the fourth round of the FA Cup against Manchester United on Saturday put a smile back on Kenny Dalglish’s face. Liverpool could recall Craig Bellamy, Charlie Adam and Dirk Kuyt to the starting line-up after they were on the bench against United. The Reds are planning to make no moves in the transfer market and the rumours linking Andy Carroll with a switch to Manchester City have been banished by both the player and Dalglish. Luis Suarez has one game left of his ban and will be available for Monday’s game with Tottenham.

Wolves have to win this game or face the possibility of sliding to nine Premier League games without a victory. Mick McCarthy’s side have not kept a clean sheet for 19 games either and are without defender Jody Craddock, former captain Karl Henry and midfielder Jamie O’Hara. Craddock and O’Hara have injury worries, whereas Henry starts his three match ban for a silly stamp on Aston Villa midfielder Marc Albrighton in their last outing. Villa won that game 3-2 at Molineux and left a lot of Wolves fans discontented. On-loan midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong, who has proved to be a great signing by McCarthy, has been cleared to play after suffering an eye injury against Villa. McCarthy has yet to make an deadline day moves, but the club have sold striker Andy Keogh and loaned Adlene Guediora and Sam Vokes.

Molineux has been quiet in recent weeks following Wolves’ poor form and Liverpool’s fans will make the trip confident of victory. Wolves have to win or face the possibility of being four points from safety if Bolton beat Arsenal on Wednesday. Liverpool will be looking to jump into fifth placed temporarily before the Gunners and Newcastle United play tomorrow and the Reds, high in confidence after their cup successes, should be victorious.
