Bent insists move to Liverpool was never on

By Bryan Waters

Friday 03 February 2012

Aston Villa striker Darren Bent has dismissed talk linking him with a move to Liverpool and insisted he never considered leaving Villa Park in January, Sky Sports reports. The England international was a firm target for Kenny Dalglish's side, but the move was rebuffed by both Villa and Bent.

Bent scored his 100th Premier League goal against QPR on Wednesday and is the type of goalscoring forward that Liverpool have missed so far this season. Andy Carroll's form has not been good in front of the net and with Luis Suarez banned for eight games, goals have been hard to come by. Dalglish was interested in Bent and made an enquiry to Villa, but the move was halted by player and club.

The 27 year old admits that he was flattered by the interest of Liverpool, but had no intentions of moving away from the Midlands side. Bent joined Villa in January 2011 and has impressed, scoring nine goals in the league already this season. The England international is looking to help Villa back up the table and is not interested in Anfield.

Bent said: '"It was laughable. I always knew I was going to be at Villa. I have said before, I would like to stay at Villa for years and really kick on in my career while playing for Aston Villa. It is flattering to be linked with clubs like Liverpool but, at the same time, I always knew I was going to be here come February 1st and I am delighted to be here. You just laugh it off and get on with it. Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in the world but at the same time it never crossed my mind once to leave.'
