Man United target could head to Russia

By Bryan Waters

Friday 03 February 2012

Basle playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri is still wanted by Russian side Zenit St. Petersburg and they could cause great opposition to Premier League champions Manchester United, talkSPORT reports. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is desperate to sign Shaqiri and is hoping to make a move in the summer for the highly rated player.

However, with the Russian transfer window not ending until later this month, Zenit have free reign to make a succession of offers for Shaqiri. Basle want around £15m for the midfielder, who has been regarded as one of the best prospects in Europe, and Zenit will start their bid at £10m to try and grab Shaqiri on a relative bargain. The Swiss international impressed Ferguson in the Champions League ties against United this season and he had hoped to make his move in the summer.

The 20 year old could move to Russia after their interest, which leaves Ferguson in a dilemma as to whether or not Shaqiri wants a move to Old Trafford. United's pulling power was once felt all over the world, but they are struggling to attract big names at this current time and have lost out on Samir Nasri, Wesley Sneijder and Luka Modric last summer as well as Ajax youngster Christian Eriksen.

Players are also leaving their academy with Ravel Morrison leaving for Championship side West Ham this week and Paul Pogba's future still undecided. Defender Ezekiel Fryers has also turned down a contract offer from United and asked his advisers to find him a move in January, which did not come around. The 19 year old has made first-team appearances this season, but is looking to move away from Old Trafford soon.
