Wenger indicates he may rethink Arsenal spending

By Bryan Waters

Saturday 04 February 2012

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed that he may review the club's transfer policy this season if the Gunners fail to finish in the top four this season, The Independent reports. The Gunners have not missed out on the top four during Wenger's reign at the club, but have a real chance of finishing below fourth this season.

Wenger sees his side currently in seventh place, five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, and the position has thrown focus on the weakness of the current Arsenal squad. Arsenal made only one move in the January transfer window, which was the loan signing of former striker Thierry Henry, and Gunners fans wanted more movement from their club. Despite not winning a trophy since 2005, Wenger has refused to spend freely and has instead signed young players who will build a large dynasty at the club.

The Gunners manager said: 'We'll make that analysis at the end of the season. The competition is very interesting and I am confident that we will come back into a strong position. The fact that we have never been in this position is rather a credit to me in 16 years so I do not take that as a blame.'

Funds could be made from the sale of fringe players such as Andrey Arshavin and Sebastian Squillaci, but Arsenal boss Wenger has yet to offload those two players. Wenger has also backed the Russian international and told fans that they would have huge respect for Arshavin if they saw him in training every day.
